This was one of two schools where Hale taught before being hanged by the British during the Revolution. The schoolhouse bell, now housed next door at St. Stephen's Church, was cast in Spain in 1815 and may be oldest bell in the country. Our state hero, Nathan Hale, taught in this school after graduating from Yale College in New Haven. He was here for one winter session from 1773 until 1774, when he took a new teaching position in New London, where he stayed until the Revolutionary War started.
