This is Prime 16's second year in a row winning Best Burger, after
toppling New Haven legend Louis Lunch in 2011. Owner Bob Potter is quick
to point out that while Prime 16 might allow – nay, encourage! –
condiments, it comes down to basics: "It starts with the beef," he says.
Manager Larry Townsend adds that the meat is "always fresh, never
frozen." And it shows – Prime 16 typically gets deliveries five days a
week, ensuring that the food on your plate is truly the freshest around.
Those who are seeking variety have more than one option when it comes
to their burger, too. There are two vegetarian options, as well as a
salmon burger, a turkey burger, and a buffalo burger. Bartender Caitlin
Guelakis says, "You can go in and eat a different burger every day of
the month." And let's not forget those brioche rolls the burgers are
served on. They're soft and buttery, but still able to stand up to all
that juicy burger goodness. (Diners can opt for a pretzel roll, too.) In
fact, the rolls are so popular that Potter's cagy about where he
procures them, only going so far as to divulge that the supplier is a
"local bakery." Customers at Prime 16 have seemingly endless options –
in heaping quantities. "For what we serve, you get a lot of value for
the price," says Potter.
