Info

A reading of the paper, The History of East Street, written by Mrs. Arthur Hollister in 1914 will take place. This is an interesting account of the residents of East Street in Washington; a story of their homes, businesses and activities during the 18th and 19th centuries. Come hear about the East Street Schoolhouse including its large whip and the ruler that was used for smaller offenses; interesting characters like, Sam Ingen, an old Native American who lived in the hat shop where he made and sold baskets, Mr. Hazen, the first man to subscribe to a newspaper in town; entrepreneurs like, Miss Fannie Smith and her millinery business, Jonathan Farrand's Store and Dr. Stoddard's medical office, and more!
