Born in Niel, Belgium, a brickyard village in the shadow of Antwerp, Mr. Eyckmans began painting at an early age. After years of experimenting with numerous medias and materials, he developed a tonal technique employed by Old Masters that incorporates every day objects with modern materials and colors, resulting in Contemporary Realism with its roots in 17th and 18th Century traditional painting. The simple objects in the artist's paintings are transformed by his masterful technique to show us their unexpected beauty. Essential to this effect is the interaction of light and dark, multi-layering and glazing. The result is a powerful and beautiful whole, strong and alive, that initially attracts the viewer from afar through color, composition and lighting, but which is fully revealed only upon examination of each painting's intimate details.
