Lenny and Joe's Fish Tales has been a Connecticut institution since 1979. Few things evoke summers on the shoreline more than their expertly fried seafood. Thankfully, we don't really have to wait for the weather to cooperate since Lenny and Joe's went years ago from a seasonal shack to "fully winterized year-round operation." Co-owner and co-founder Joe Goldberg is pretty much a Connecticut seafood celebrity. "We're the masters of frying seafood," says Goldberg. "We use a fresh product. We don't take it out of the freezer. It's not pre-breaded. We bread it and cook it to order." That means you can stand at the counter and basically watch the folks in the kitchen transform the fish into your meal. Like all the best stuff, it's simple, but not exactly easy. It's not something you necessarily want to try at home. There's a reason we go to the pros for favorites like fried seafood. "On a busy day at the Madison restaurant we'll use about 1500 pounds of french fries," says Jim Schreck, owner of the Madison location. "We'll use 300 pounds of fish. The same with scallops." On a busy weekend, between the two locations, they can serve over 10,000 people.
