The "new Rudys" -- relocated from its longtime Elm Street location to the corner of Chapel and Howe, and upgraded with more room, more comfortable chairs and booths and a grander menu -- had its first anniversary on May 1. "Once the doors opened and people started piling in, it just felt right," says manager Jeff Petrin. "One of things I'm most proud of: we breathed a lot of life into that corner. You can walk around there at night." Plus the fries are back. Ever since the well-established bar business was bought in the early '90s by restauranteur Omer Ipek, it has offered fries to die for. Technically, they're Belgian frites, and come with an array of dipping sauces, from warm cheddar cheese to satay peanut sauce. The vibe of the room depends on "when you come in," says co-manager Emily Robichaud. "There's dining earlier, then the bar feel." And the fries are the foundation of all of it.
