Judy Dworin Performance Project's Ensemble tackles the subject of immigration and the fundamental question of who belongs in America in their latest dance theater work, (US). Presented in partnership with Hartford Public Library's Downtown branch, (US) brings the artist's eye to examine subjects such as openness vs. exclusion, sanctuary vs. repression, and individualism vs. conformity. Audience and artist will journey through the Library building together, following the progress of the immigrant experience from Arrival (lobby) to the central atrium (Walls) to the Community Room (Sanctuary). Along the way, audiences hear voices from the community, relating stories and poetic texts layer with music and sound. Vintage suitcases act as both props and scenery, serving as material extensions of the dancers carrying them. In a nod to how much of the immigrant experience and public dialog play out online, the Library's computer screen will display metaphoric imagery that shifts and evolves as the piece unfolds.
Performances: Friday, 6 p.m.; Saturday, 6 and 8 p.m. Space is limited.
