A screening of "Dislecksia: The Movie" will be followed by a question and answer session with movie director Harvey Hubbell.
During the event, which is sponsored by Whole Foods Market, Hubbell will share his story of growing up as a child with dyslexia and will explore the complex issue of learning differences.
Dyslexia is classified as a learning disability under state and federal special education law, and it is characterized by one's impairment to read, write, spell, and in severe cases, speak. In Connecticut, Public Law 14-39 helps to ensure that students with specific learning disability/dyslexia are identified early and that they receive appropriate instruction. CREC is helping this effort by offering new professional development services for educators, including a specific learning disability/dyslexia consortium, workshops on the topic, and several literacy services for struggling learners.
This special event, made possible by CREC's Technical Assistance and Brokering Services and the CREC Foundation, will help mark National Dyslexia Awareness Month by creating awareness of specific learning disabilities/dyslexia, and it is also a way to launch CREC's new professional development opportunities.
