The Choreographers' Showcase, directed this year by Judi Tolomea, provides 26 dance students from throughout Connecticut with the rare opportunity to learn from and perform with critically acclaimed choreographers.
This year's Choreographers' Showcase will feature Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, artistic director of Urban Bush Women; Kate St. Amand, co-artistic director of SYREN Modern Dance Co.; Lorelei Chang, artistic director of DancEnglight; Chicago choreographer Maiya Redding; hip hop choreographer Brandon Couloute, CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts faculty member Corrine Bates; and academy alumni Joseph Heitman and Rosanna Karabetsos. St. Amand's "Willkommen" will open the show.
Zollar's "Walking with Pearl-Africa Diaries" honors choreographer and anthropologist Pearl Primus, and Redding's "Thou Art Loosed" merges contemporary dance by depicting restrain and final freedom with music. Chang choreographs a Chinese dance, "Lotus Garden;" "Five" by Bates shifts through the five stages of grief with subtle sensitivity; and "St. Amand's "Red and Blue, Bitter and Sweet" looks at the world of quantum physics through the lens of human relationships. Couloute and Karabetsos collaborate to choreograph," and Heiman's ballet, "The Remontant," refers to the stages of flowering from dormancy to blossoming.
